Downhill skiing, snowboarding, backcountry and cross country skiing are the wintertime lifeblood of the Tahoe/Truckee area. Peak elevation at Squaw Valley USA is over 9,000 feet, so needless to say, Squaw gets a lot of snow and has the longest ski season in all of Tahoe.
Why Squaw you might ask?
I’ll admit, I don’t regularly ski Squaw since my office is located at Northstar, (hence free ski lockers🎿) but I can agree Squaw is one of the finest ski resorts in the country. Squaw Valley USA Ski Resort in Olympic Valley California, is one of the biggest ski areas in the US.
Squaw’s undeniable success can be largely credited to recognition from hosting the 1960 Winter Olympics. It is the second-largest ski area in The Tahoe Lakes Basin, after Heavenly, and has 30 lifts 3,600 acres and the only funitel in the U.S. Since Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows are co-owned, since 2012 the resorts offer joint access to 6,200 acres and over 270 trails. It’s a really impressive resort which will continue to draw adventurers from all over the state of California.
The resort hosts around 600,000 skiers a year. It’s unsurprising that properties for sale in Squaw Valley USA are so desirable. It’s really no wonder why people flock to Squaw – even just the drive into Olympic Valley is breathtaking, and add to that long runs, advanced terrain, and the Squaw/Alpine partnership – and you’ve got a winner.

There’s another wonderful community called Tahoe Donner that is really popular for people that ski Squaw. The great thing about Tahoe Donner that my second home buyers really like is the amenities. They’re endless. Wintertime skiing, snowshoeing, a huge cross-country trail network, and then summertime access to their Equestrian Center and Private Homeowner’s Beach on Donner Lake make Tahoe Donner very desirable.
